Gestalt and Contrast

WELCOME! To the first week of Design Principles. With Gestalt and Contrast as the first set of principles, I have done some exploration on the idea of Gestalt and Contrast. Below are the images that inspired me towards the final outcome.

GESTALT

What is Gestalt? The ability of the human mind to complete an incomplete image, visually. Not only an incomplete image, it can also be an organized whole perceived as a specific "pattern" or a "configuration". It can be expressed in many different techniques like figure ground, proximity, continuation and closure. Like the first image above, the green squares stand out only because our brain recognizes the squares as a configuration. The randomness is perceived and a pattern is formed.

FINAL OUTCOME

The final outcome for Gestalt involves the use of two conventional materials; White and Black paper. The intention behind this arrangement of shapes is to create continuation. The empty space in the centre is where the opportunity for continuation is given to the brain. A straight line of circles diagonally.

CONTRAST

Contrast being the most common design principle, it is never boring. "A strikingly different colour that stands out among the rest". Contrast is the combination of two different extremes but they belong to each other. Their differences are the reason why they complement each other. This is Contrast. Note the same set of chairs, just one in a different colour and that stands out.

FINAL OUTCOME

"The limited within the unlimited". With the same White and Black paper, Contrast is achieved with a similar use of shapes. The white circle in the centre represents the limitation of light in this existence. Every light source is bound to burn out eventually. Darkness on the other hand is the unlimited. It fills the entire cosmos and it can never be destroyed.
